Washington - The US Agriculture Department said it bought $9.2 million in beef that will be distributed in the National School Lunch and other government food aid programs.
“These purchases support the beef industry and its workers by bolstering prices,” USDA Secretary Dan Glickman said in a statement.
The department bought eight million pounds of frozen beef products worth $8.1 million. The buy is the first ground beef purchase for the 1998-99 school lunch program, the USDA said.
The USDA bought 520,000 pounds of frozen beef roasts worth $1.067 million. The purchase is part of the USDA's previously announced $30 million beef buy to boost prices, the department said.
