Tel Aviv - A conservative religious group wrecked the outdoor tables of a McDonald's restaurant near Netania, north of Tel Aviv and said they did it because the fast food restaurant sells pork and does not observe the Sabbath.
The group left a note on cardboard identifying themselves as “Commando Habbad.” Habbad is an ultra-orthodox group that engages in Jewish missionary activities.
McDonald's owner in Israel, Omri Padan, denied selling pork, which many Jews and Moslems consider offensive. He said the meat they serve is kosher, because most Israelis want it to conform to Jewish dietary laws.
However: “We let the (client) decide what to eat. If they want meat with cheese they will get it with cheese and if they want it with ice cream, they will get it with ice cream.”
Orthodox Jews who keep kosher wait several hours before having dairy after eating meat.
Padan said five of McDonald's 55 restaurants in Israel are kosher. They do not sell cheeseburgers, ice cream or milk with the coffee. But the restaurant near Netania “will continue to function normally. We are not going to yield to the violence of the political-religious establishment here.”
