Washington - U.S. Agriculture Department said it bought $2.2 million worth of frozen beef roasts and $2.3 million worth of water-added hams under previously announced meat purchase initiatives.
USDA bought about one million lbs of frozen beef roasts and 1.8 million lbs of water-added hams, it detailed.
The purchases were made under two previously announced USDA initiatives to buy $30 million of beef and another $30 million of pork. The bonus buy programs were announced as an effort to help boost sagging meat prices.
“These bonus buys support the beef and pork industries by bolstering producer prices,” USDA stated.
The meat bought by USDA will be used in the National School Lunch Program and in other food aid initiatives.
