Washington - The U.S. Agriculture Department said that it has purchased 8 million pounds of beef and pork valued at $9 million.
The purchases are part of USDA's $30 million pork and $30 million beef bonus buys announced earlier this year.
Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said the purchases would help livestock producers by boosting prices.
USDA will use the meat for the National School Lunch Program and other food assistance programs.
