Plant City, FL - Workers at a Lykes meat plant near Tampa went on strike Monday after rejecting the company's latest contract offer, a spokesman for the United Food and Commercial Workers union said.
The plant makes hot dogs and cold cuts. It employs about 560 people.
The union is seeking a 25 cent an hour wage increase in each of the next three years, the union spokesman said. The company offered a single 25 cent increase over 18 months, he said.
The contract was rejected 352-23 in a vote Monday morning and picket lines were set up. It is the only Lykes plant affected by the strike.
Lykes was bought last year by Smithfield Foods.
