Des Moines, IA - The National Pork Producers Council says it welcomes today's purchases by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service of 1.8 million pounds of frozen hams and 3.38 million pounds of canned pork for distribution to federal food assistance programs. The purchases are part of an ongoing effort by USDA to help ease the current large amount of pork in the marketplace and the resulting low prices that pork producers are receiving. NPPC had requested increased government pork purchases earlier this year to help pork producers weather the present low price situation.
"We greatly appreciate USDA's continued efforts to help pork producers through this difficult period of low hog prices," said NPPC President Donna Reifschneider, a pork producer from Smithton, Ill.
Total USDA purchases of frozen hams in the past two months have totalled 3.06 million pounds at a cost of $3.7 million, and 5.2 million pounds of canned pork at a cost of $4.9 million.
