980362 US & Philippines Report Their Pork-Poultry Row is Settled

March 26, 1998

Geneva - The United States and the Philippines have told the World Trade Organisation that they have resolved a dispute over Philippine limits on imports of pork and poultry, trade diplomats.

The two countries are due to officially report their accord, which came after several months of negotiations, to a meeting on Wednesday of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body.

The United States had complained that a tariff quota system imposed by Manila on imports of frozen and fresh pork and poultry was being operated to delay entry of U.S. imports even under the quotas.

The complaint was originally filed with the WTO in April last year and was reinforced with another in October when new measures to strengthen the system were introduced in the Philippines.

In a note to the WTO Secretariat, the two countries reported that they had reached a mutually satisfactory solution after the Manila government had modified regulations on the administration of the quota system.
