980328 Pork Producers Act on Animal Health Issues

March 10, 1998

Reno, NV - Delegates at the 1998 National Pork Industry Forum in Reno, Nev., March 6-7, took action on two important animal health issues.

Noting that the U.S. pork supply is now virtually trichina free, the delegates voted for its producer-run organization, the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), to take aggressive steps to certify that fact and communicate it to domestic and international U.S. pork customers.

Nearly 4.5 million U.S. market hogs have been tested for trichinae within the past two years, with virtually zero incidence reported. One of the major reasons for getting out the information that the U.S. pork supply is virtually trichina free is that the U.S. is now competing in the export market with countries that have in place a national trichinae inspection process.

On another animal health issue, producer delegates called on NPPC and the National Pork Board to support an on-farm Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) research project on the feasibility of eliminating PRRS infection in U.S. herds through implementation of various on-farm management practices.

The research project would include development of management recommendations for controlling or eliminating PRRS, and widely disseminating effective on-farm protocols for managing the disease.
