Redmond, WA - Alcide Corporation announced that the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the company's Food Additive Petition for the use of Sanova(TM) as an antimicrobial agent in the processing of red meat.
In publishing its approval, the agency concluded that the proposed use of Sanova is "safe and the additive will have the intended technical effect of reducing microbial contamination on red meat."
The FDA approval is an important milestone in the product development process and an essential step in gaining United States Department of Agriculture approval to test Sanova under commercial conditions and ultimately for industry use.
Joseph A. Sasenick, President and Chief Executive Officer of Alcide commented that, "The Alcide patented technology embodied in Sanova is ideally suited for control of food-borne pathogens such as E. coli 0157:H7, Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter and others. On January 9, 1998, we received final USDA approval for the commercial introduction of Sanova on poultry and several plants are now realizing the benefits of this new antimicrobial intervention. Red meats will follow and ultimately we believe that Sanova has an important role to play in control of pathogens on fruits, vegetables and fish. Each of these markets represents a major opportunity for the company."
Alcide Corporation develops and markets unique biocidal products based on its patented technology. Alcide currently sells anti-infective products to the animal health market and disinfecting products to the medical industries. In addition, the company filed a New Drug Application with the FDA in September, 1994 for a human preoperative skin antiseptic.
