Reno, NV - Elected producer delegates at the annual meeting of the National Pork Producers Council now underway in Reno, Nev., have given their overwhelming support to the National Environmental Dialogue on Pork Production, known as the Framework, conducted last year.
After thorough debate on a resolution concerning the issue, the National Pork Producers Council delegates approved by voice vote, a resolution saying that pork producers support national environmental standards for nutrient management, based on sound science and generally accepted agriculture best management practices.
It is hoped that the Framework will provide a uniform template on all aspects of pork production which reasonably addresses environmental concerns, while allowing for sustainable pork production systems to continue and prosper.
Prior to the vote, delegates heard via satellite from Carol Browner, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Speaking from Boston, Browner praised the pork industry for the leadership they have shown by their participation in last year's Dialogue. EPA also participated in the eight-month-long series of meetings, along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and agricultural and environmental officials from a number of key hog production states.
While the Framework recommendations, released last December, currently have no force of law, NPPC and the pork industry hope they will be used as a uniform standard by local, state and national regulators in setting any new pork industry environmental regulations.
Administrator Browner, in her satellite remarks told producer delegates, "We will work with you and your partners at the state level to address the greatest problems first. Let's target the greatest problems first."
