Chicago, IL - Thorn Apple Valley will cut hog slaughter at its Detroit plant by about 30 percent this week to conduct maintenance on its meat cooler, a company official said.
The plant normally slaughters two shifts and one shift will be discontinued this week to allow for the maintenance to be completed. Although the cutback will involve some lay offs, many of the affected workers will perform the maintenance work, the official said.
No official slaughter estimate was given for the plant, but industry sources estimated it at about 14,000 head a day.
