980238 Ansett Airlines Introduces Subway Sandwiches

February 20, 1998

Milford, CT - Subway Sandwiches and Salads has joined with Ansett Australia to bring the best in casual dining to the skies. Ansett Australia began serving Subway sandwiches on flights out of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide in late November 1997. The sandwiches are served on flights departing between 1:30- 4:00 p.m. during afternoon tea.

According to Nicole Kelso, regional manager for Subway Australia, the deal came about after an Ansett Chef had lunch at a Subway restaurant. "He was very impressed with the product and the rest is history."

"Ansett and Subway have established a great relationship. We like to offer our clients/customers the best in quality and freshness and the sandwiches we have to offer are of this quality. Presentation is probably of most importance to us," says "Happy" Keerthi Hapugaspeniya, national coordinating chef for Ansett Australia.

There are five Subway franchisees making the sandwiches for the project. They prepare nearly 30,000 sandwiches a week. The two 4-inch sandwiches served are Ham and Roast Beef. They include most of the fresh vegetable toppings (lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, onions, pickles and black olives) that are part of the standard Subway menu. Sandwiches served on Ansett do not include onions and pickles.

According to Jim Dimas, Development Agent for Subway in New South Wales, "The Ansett project has provided an opportunity for thousands of people to try the Subway product for the first time. We're thrilled with the initial response from airline staff as well as passengers, many of whom have become regular visitors to our restaurants since their first taste of Subway in the sky."

In Australia there are 143 Subway shops serving fresh made-to-order submarine sandwiches and salads. The Subway Sandwiches and Salads franchise is the world's second largest restaurant chain with over 13,100 sandwich shops operating in 64 countries. Last year systemwide sales for the chain exceeded three billion dollars (US).
