WASHINGTON - The U.S. Agriculture Deparment said today that the Beef America Co of Norfolk, Nebraska is recalling 443,656 pounds of ground beef due to bacterial contamination.
However, the recall is not expected to grow to the size of the recent massive Hudson Foods Inc. hamburger recall, a USDA spokeswoman said. That recall in August totaled 25 million pounds and was the largest in U.S. history.
POSSIBLE LOST DATA
Some of the ground beef had been sold by a grocery store in Emporia, Va. in early September. The E. coli was detected in random samples taken at the store.
USDA official acknowledged Friday that it is unlikely that Beef America could actually recall much of the ground beef because it was sold as fresh product.
However, the absence of an outbreak of illnesses associated with E. coli indicates that much of the beef has been consumed without any harm, they said.
