E. Coli Infections Investigated in South Dakota

June 24, 1997 -- Two California children, a 3-year old and her younger brother, are ill due to the E.coli (most likely O157:H7, although the strain has not been isolated) bacteria after visiting their grandmother in South Dakota.

The source of the infection is still being investigated.

The children arrived with their family on June 6 for a 5-day stay in South Dakota. The girl became ill on June 11, the same day she left the state. The boy became ill about 3 days later. Officials are unsure if the children were infected while in South Dakota or during the drive from California.
